    At DramaFever, we operate a next-generation internet TV platform, with offerings ranging from international dramas with original content, to AMC’s Sundance Documentary site; a “screams on demand” horror site, and beyond. At peak load, we serve tens of thousands of requests per second, and our AWS instance count autoscales up 10-20x throughout the week. In order to scale, we’ve used a variety of open-source tools and innovative techniques to manage our fleet of instances.

    DevOps: A Brief History

    I had heard the word DevOps mentioned over the last several years, but I never gave it much thought. Perhaps I’m dense; my official job title is DevOps Engineer, however, I’ve since been “promoted” to Hip-Hoperations Engineer. Since attending ChefConf 2015 I’ve learned that having DevOps in your job title may or may not be “good”, depending on whom you ask. Has my ignorance resulted in a DevOps faux pas?

    This was my first time speaking at a tech conference and my first time attending ChefConf. In short, the conference was well organized and I had a great time speaking and meeting new people. This year’s conference was held in Santa Clara, California at the Santa Clara Convention Center. I had any number of remarkable experiences, and I think Chef, the organizers, and the Chef community at large should be very proud of how the conference turned out.

    ChefConf2015: Cooking Up Drama

    “What do you mean, we don’t have configuration management?” Joining DramaFever’s ops team last year, we both came from orgs that used Chef, but initially we disagreed about which flavor of CM to use here. We cooperated to build awesome instead of vying for the upper hand. (Go go gadget devops.) We’ll discuss the initial concerns around going with Chef and how we addressed them. DramaFever uses Docker extensively, but we found Dockerfiles aren’t enough to keep All The Things consistent.
